NUJ Kano Holds One Day Workshop On Ethical Standards

The Kano State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), has organized a one-day capacity building workshop for practicing journalists, on the code of ethics, techniques for Safety, and effective translation in the media.

Held at the state council secretariat, Sunday in Kano, as part of its ongoing press week activities, the event brought together media practitioners playing different roles in their establishments, aimed at improving professional conduct among them, most importantly maintaining the core values of journalism code of ethics.

In his welcome address, the chairman of the council, Comrade Suleiman Abdullahi Dederi, said the council has organized the session, which gathered together, a seasoned broadcast professionals and experts in the media, to equip the participants with methods and techniques, to reduce errors while performing their duties, aimed to elevate the standard of journalism in Kano State.

Dederi, urged the participants to put into practice, the acquired knowledge in their daily duties.

An expert in the profession, Mustapha Muhammad, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Kano State, who reflected on his experience as a reporter to the BBC during the Boko-Haram insurgency in Borno State, has explored a lot about the importance of the safety of journalist covering events in the risky situation.

He taughted extensively on the techniques of a safety coverage in a hostile environment, banditry, riots, and elections coverage among others, stressing that self-safety most be the first for the journalist.

Salisu Adamu from the National Broadcasting Corporation NBC in kano state, who taughted the participants on the code of ethics of journalism, urged them to observe diligently, the high professional and ethical standards in discharging their duties.

He said every journalist is expected to attain the high degree of public trust, as trust is the backbone of the profession. He emphasizes the principles of factual, accuracy, balance and fair news reporting as the ultimate objectives of good journalism.

He further cautioned journalists to refrain from publishing inaccurate or misleading information that breaches regulations, saying that the commission would not hesitate to sanction media establishment that is found guilty to such violations.

A seasoned broadcaster, Hajiya Amina Yahaya Deen, shared to the participants, her proving track record in the media industry. She extensively imparted and equipped them with the knowledge on methods and techniques of effective news translation.

In his remark, the managing director of Radio Kano, Alhaji Abubakar Adamu Rano, has commended NUJ Kano under the watch of Comrade Dederi, for coming up with the idea of organizing such an important session, which he says it serves as a reminder to them, he then prayed for the successful deliberation.

Also on his part, the General Manager of Hikima Radio, Alhaji Muhammad Musa Muhammad Nyaa, appreciated the efforts of the council for organizing the workshop, saying that it came at a right time when the media organizations are in need of this kind of orientation.

Expressing how he was highly impressed by the event, he encouraged young journalists, among other things, to also expose themselves to a reading culture. He justified that it will assist them improve their talents and help them excell in the profession.

The event concluded with presentation of certificate to the participants, closing prayers and group photographs.
