The Nigerian Senate has urged the federal government to consider suspending the election campaign in eight northern states due to the deteriorating security situation.

Senator Abdul Ningi APC from Bauchi State, presented the motion, expressing concern over the increasing number of terrorist attacks that are threatening lives and property of the people.

According to him, political activities should not continue at a time when the public is facing security threats, saying that the protection of lives must be prioritized above all else.

The states mentioned include Borno affected by the dreaded insurgency, attacking civilian population and on military bases, claiming lives of civilians and security forces.

Other states including Plateau, Bauchi, Benue, Niger, Sokoto, Kebbi and parts of Kano, where terrorists attacks are continuing.

The senate also urged security agencies to intensify their efforts to contain the situation and rescue people held captive by bandits, especially in the most vulnerable areas.

This move comes at a time when the politics of the 2027 elections are seen to be gaining momentum, despite the security challenges plaguing some parts of the country.

He said it was a mistake to go ahead with the 2027 election campaign while people were suffering from security problems
